- (10562) Iguazu Falls, Brazil
This panorama (made by combining 4 separate photographs) begins to illustrate the breadth of the magnificent Iguazu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Argentina. (Brazil is in the foreground; Argentina is in the background.) Even this panorama, in fact, shows only a portion of the falls; the largest cataract lies beyond the left edge. (January 18, 2009. Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom ('point-and-shoot'), panorama.) - (10283) Kea
This kea (a native alpine parrot) was, unfortunately, munching on some human junk food when I photographed it in New Zealand's Southern Alps. (November 22, 2021. Nikon D7200, 1/250s @ f/4, 80mm, ISO 100.) - (10169) Fort Niagara, New York
My favorite drone photo this year was this photo of Fort Niagara, at the northwestern tip of New York state, on Lake Ontario. (August 6, 2022. DJI Mini 3 Pro, 1/1600s @ f/1.7, 24mm, ISO 120.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Niagara - (10133) Wreck of the WWII German battleship Turpitz
- (8690) Midnight Sun over Tromsø, Norway
In July, just prior to a business trip to Stockholm, Sweden, I visited far-northern Norway - above the Arctic Circle - where, at the time, the sun was up 24 hours per day. This photo was taken shortly after midnight. If it hadn't been for the clouds at the far right, the sun would have been visible. (July 10, 2009. Nikon D-5000 (DSLR), HDR from 3-shot bracketed exposure (-2,0,+2 EV), 24mm, ISO 200.) - (8628) Monument Valley
A photo of Monument Valley, Arizona, made it to my “10 favorites” list ten years ago, in 2012. Here’s another view of this beautiful natural landmark, taken from a viewpoint within the park. (September 22, 2022. Nikon D7200, 1/160s @ f/10, 24mm, ISO 100.) My photo from 2012: https://photos.rossfinlayson.com/picture.php?/183/category/31 - (8327) Kangaroo Balls!
- (8096) Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Another photo from my summertime trip to the U.S. East Coast. This butterfly - an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - is very common in the eastern U.S., but, living in the western U.S., I don’t think I had ever seen one before. (July 31, 2022. Nikon D7200, 1/250s @ f/5, 80mm, ISO 100.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papilio_glaucus - (7705) Point Bonita Lighthouse, Marin County
- (7671) Snow Canyon State Park
Snow Canyon State Park - near St. George, Utah - is relatively little-known, especially in comparison to nearby Zion National Park. But it’s an especially beautiful park; well worth a visit if you’re in the area. (May 19, 2022. Nikon D7200, 1/320s @ f/8, 18mm, ISO 100.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Canyon_State_Park - (7660) Wild bobcat, Henry Coe State Park
Over the years, I've seen several bobcats while mountain biking. They are usually shy and elusive, but - remarkably - this bobcat just sat and stared at me as I approached within about 100 feet. (April 4, 2009. Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom ('point-and-shoot'), 1/250s @ f/3.7, 63mm, ISO 200.) - (7569) Buffalo
I found something intriguing about the light and shadows inside this building in Buffalo, New York, late on a summer evening. (August 5, 2022. Apple iPhone 13 Pro, 1/46s @ f/2.8, 77mm, ISO 800.) - (7395) Aurora Australis
On the evening of November 4th, while on vacation in southern New Zealand, I saw reports on social media that the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) might be visible. I drove to a rural location with a clear southern horizon, and, with the naked eye, saw just a faint green glow. However my iPhone's camera, with a long exposure and high ISO, was able to capture much more. (November 4, 2021. Apple iPhone 13 Pro, 1s @ f/1.5, 26mm, ISO 10000.) - (7370) Jellyfish, Monterey Bay Aquarium
This year’s list includes three photos from s smartphone - including this serene photo of a jellyfish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. (September 6, 2022. Apple iPhone 13 Pro, 1/60s @ f/2.8, 26mm, ISO 160.)
