- 'Pale Ale'
This bobcat - nicknamed 'Pale Ale' by local rangers - is frequently seen in the Hunting Hollow area of Henry Coe State Park, California. This time I was lucky enough to have my telephoto lens on hand. (April 23, 2018. Nikon D7200, 1/500s @ f/14, 300 mm, ISO 9000.) - 'Blood Supermoon'
Clouds blocked the view of the September 27th lunar eclipse (coinciding with an unusually large 'supermoon') from my home in the San Francisco Bay Area - but fortunately at the time I happened to be vacationing in southern Arizona - where the skies were clear. (September 27, 2015. Nikon D5000, 0.8s @ f/5.6, 300 mm, ISO 3200.) - 'Black Sand Beach'
As with last year's '10 favorites' list, this year's list includes a photo from the northwest coast of New Zealand's North Island - where the beaches have black sand (formed by magnetite). This photograph is of Auckland's beautiful Whatipu Beach, in the late afternoon. (March 10, 2015. Nikon D5000, 1/250s @ f/9, 18 mm, ISO 200.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whatipu - 'Arrival'
Resembling a scene from a science fiction movie, the symmetry and shadows of this terminal entrance intrigued me as I arrived at France's Lyon Airport. (July 21, 2018. Apple iPhone 7, 1/313s @ f/1.8, 3.99 mm, ISO 20.) - 'Angry Coastline'
The first 'drone' photo to make it onto my annual '10 favorites' list. This aerial photo of churning ocean waters near Bean Hollow Beach - in San Mateo County, California - was taken in the late afternoon, as the setting sun lit up the waves and the coastline beyond. (January 20, 2015. DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter, 1/2150s @ f/2.8, 5 mm, ISO 100.) - "Walkable Roller Coaster", Duisburg, Germany
Perhaps my favorite wide-angle photograph from 2013. This large sculpture is a "walkable roller coaster" (except, of course, for the loop, which is gated closed anyway). Conditions were bad for photography - an overcast sky, with flat light - but I like the way that the 'arms' of the sculpture draw the viewer's attention into the center. (July 13, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/1250s @ f/7.1, 19mm, ISO 200.) - "The Photographer"
Mountain biking friend Dave Oare photographs the Grand Canyon at sunset. (April 19, 2010. Nikon D5000, 1/125s @ f/9, 13mm, ISO 200.) - "Pacific Coast Sunset"
When I first took this photograph (at Pescadero Beach, in northern California), I wasn't expecting much - but I liked the contrast between the orange-red sky and the blue sea, and the silhouetted vegetation in the foreground. (August 24, 2014. Nikon D5000, 1/60s @ f/10, 85mm, ISO 200.) - "Machine" - Black Belt!
In July a good friend and training partner Justin "Machine" Holder - after more than 8 years of training - was awarded a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Ralph Gracie. (July 2, 2009. Nikon D-5000 (DSLR), 1/100s @ f/3.5, 18mm, ISO 400.) - "Icons" - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
I didn't think much of this photo after I first took it, but it grew on me. It shows Rio's famous "Christ the Redeemer" statue silhouetted against communication towers. (January 13, 2009. Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom ('point-and-shoot'), 1/650s @ f/6.3, 63mm, ISO 50.) - "Field of Light"
In June 2019 I attended the "Field of Light at Sensorio" outdoor art exhibit near Paso Robles, California, USA. (June 12, 2019. Nikon D7200, 1/10s @ f/5, 18mm, ISO 25600.) https://www.sensoriopaso.com/ - "California Majesty"
This photograph was a surprise. While hiking in northern California's Grant Ranch County Park, I hiked to the top of a hill, looking for a panoramic view. But instead, I was struck by the sight of this stunning California Live Oak, back-lit by the late afternoon sun. (April 6, 2014. Nikon D5000, 1/250s @ f/6.3, 11mm, ISO 200.) - "Black Sand Dune"
The northwest coast of New Zealand's North Island is notable for its black sand beaches (formed by magnetite). This photograph of Lake Wainamu - just inland from Auckland's Bethell's Beach - at dusk provides a striking contrast: A black sand dune in the foreground, with a lake and tracts of native bush behind. (December 30, 2014. Nikon D5000, 1/400s @ f/7.1, 20mm, ISO 200.) - "Black Caviar"
In February, at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, I witnessed the champion racehorse "Black Caviar" win her 23rd-successive race (also breaking the course record for 1000 metres). The horse retired two months later - undefeated in 25 races. Technically, this photograph is not remarkable, but it captures a piece of sporting history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Caviar (February 16, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/1000s @ f/5.6, 300mm, ISO 250.) - "Autumn in Vancouver"
While in Vancouver, Canada for a business meeting, I noticed the spectacular fall colors of these trees. I like the contrast between the colorful trees on the right-hand side of the path, and the almost bare trees on the left-hand side, and how both rows of tree focus the viewer's attention towards the high-rise buildings in the background. (November 8, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/50s @ f/14, 40mm, ISO 250.)
