- 'Black Caviar' - the world's best racehorse - wins again!
- 'Beatles-Platz', Hamburg (where The Beatles first performed in 1960)
- "White King" polar bear, Elko, Nevada
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/white-king - "Walkable Roller Coaster", Duisburg, Germany
Perhaps my favorite wide-angle photograph from 2013. This large sculpture is a "walkable roller coaster" (except, of course, for the loop, which is gated closed anyway). Conditions were bad for photography - an overcast sky, with flat light - but I like the way that the 'arms' of the sculpture draw the viewer's attention into the center. (July 13, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/1250s @ f/7.1, 19mm, ISO 200.) - "Turning Torso" building, Malmö, Sweden
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_torso - "The World's Longest Elkhorn Arch", Afton, Wyoming
- "Schwerbelastungskörper" - a failed Nazi construction project in Berlin
The Nazis (actually, some of the Nazis' French prisoners) built this huge concrete cylinder to test whether the area's sandy ground would be able to withstand an even larger 'triumphal arch'. It turns out that it wouldn't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerbelastungsk%C3%B6rper - "Reichstag", Berlin
The German Parliament building from 1894-1933, and again since 1999. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_%28building%29 - "Konzerthaus", Berlin
- "Key Deer", Big Pine Key
- "House of the Seamen's Guildhall" (1535), Lübeck, Germany
- "Holstentor", Lübeck, Germany
The old western city gate for the city of Lübeck, which was the major city of the Hanseatic League. (Lübeck, along with two other northern German Hanseatic cities - Wismar and Stralsund - are UNESCO World Heritage listed.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holstentor - "Girl in a Wetsuit" - Vancouver's answer to Copenhagen's "The LIttle Mermaid"
- "Black Caviar"
In February, at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, I witnessed the champion racehorse "Black Caviar" win her 23rd-successive race (also breaking the course record for 1000 metres). The horse retired two months later - undefeated in 25 races. Technically, this photograph is not remarkable, but it captures a piece of sporting history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Caviar (February 16, 2013.
