- Young Egret, Shoreline Park
I took this photo on a brisk winter afternoon at Shoreline Park in Mountain View, California. I liked the detail that came out in the bird's feathers. (January 23, 2011. Nikon D5000, 1/200s @ f/5.6, 280mm, ISO 200.) - You Looking at Me?
Was this cute seal staring at me as I photographed it at dusk from Point Lobos, California? Probably not, but I like to think that perhaps it was. I also liked the circular ripples in the water. (May 6, 2012. Nikon D5000, 1/100s @ f/6.3, 300mm, ISO 200.) - Wildflower, Parc National de la Gaspésie
I didn't do much macro (i.e., magnified, close-up) photography in 2011, but this particular photo - of a wildflower growing in the Parc National de la Gaspésie, Quebec, Canada - stood out. I liked the contrast between the flower's orange petals, and the green background. (August 1, 2011. Nikon D5000, 1/50s @ f/22, 85mm, ISO 360.) - Wild bobcat, Henry Coe State Park
Over the years, I've seen several bobcats while mountain biking. They are usually shy and elusive, but - remarkably - this bobcat just sat and stared at me as I approached within about 100 feet. (April 4, 2009. Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom ('point-and-shoot'), 1/250s @ f/3.7, 63mm, ISO 200.) - White Globe Lily
My favorite macro photograph of 2021 was this shot of a White Globe Lily in Foothills Park, Palo Alto, California. (April 26, 2021. Nikon D7200, 1/25s @ f/22, 85mm, ISO 359.) - Whananaki, New Zealand
My favorite drone photo of 2019 was this photo of a small New Zealand seaside town, in the 'Golden Hour' shortly before sunset. (January 23, 2019. DJI Mavic Pro, 1/844s @ f/2.2, 4.73mm, ISO 100.) - Western Racer, Henry Coe State Park, California
My favorite macro photograph of 2013. With an 85mm macro lens, I was able to get within 1 foot of this small snake, as it watched me warily. I like the detail that I was able to capture in its eye and nose. (April 17, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/100s @ f/18, 85mm, ISO 200.) - Wave Rock
When I create a HDR ("High Dynamic Range') image (from multiple bracketed exposures), I usually try for a natural look. In this case, however, I liked this image - produced by the Photomatix software's "Deep" algorithm - because it seemed reminiscent of a water color painting. Wave Rock is a remarkable erosion-formed cliff in Western Australia. (December 2, 2014. Nikon D5000, exposure blending from a 3-shot bracketed exposure @ f/8, 15mm, ISO 200.) - Ward Charcoal Ovens
These ovens - in a remote part of Nevada, USA - were used in the late 1800s to prepare charcoal for use in nearby silver mines. I like the composition formed by the line of identical ovens, receding into the distance. (June 2, 2014. Nikon D5000, 1/1600s @ f/5.6, 16mm, ISO 200.) - View from the Great Ocean Road
The scenic "Great Ocean Road" runs for more than 200 km along the coast of the south-eastern Australian state of Victoria. The view towards the sun, and the somewhat hazy light - usually not good for landscape photography - happened to give this photograph a dreamy, painting-like feeling. I particularly like the texture in the foreground vegetation, and in the waves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_ocean_road (February 10, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/50s @ f/18, 16mm, ISO 400.) - Victory, and Defeat
Perhaps my single favorite photo of 2011. In the finals of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship in Long Beach, California, Antonio Braga Neto is congratulated by his coach, Roberto "Gordo" Correa, after winning the Gold Medal in the Ultra-Heavy division. Braga Neto's gallant but defeated opponent, Rodrigo Cavaca, crouches dejectedly in the background. (June 5, 2011. Nikon D5000, 1/125s @ f/5.3, 195mm, ISO 1600.) - Utah Weather Station
Another chance encounter while visiting a Degree Confluence Point. While hiking to [40,-114], in a remote region of western Utah, USA, I came across this automated weather station, framed by snow-capped mountains. (June 23, 2019. Nikon D7200, 1/200s @ f/9, 19mm, ISO 100.) http://confluence.org/confluence.php?visitid=21875 - Turkish Fisherman
In Spring I vacationed in Turkey, and three photos from this year's "10 favorites" album came from this trip. Around noon on a bright sunny day I photographed this man fishing - cigarette in mouth - just outside the marked-off public swimming area at Ölündeniz Beach, near Fethiye on Turkey's 'Turquoise Coast'. (June 1, 2012. Nikon D5000, 1/125s @ f/16, 300mm, ISO 200.) - Transit of Venus
My single favorite photo from 2012 was an accident. While in Istanbul, Turkey on vacation, I woke up early on June 6th to try to photograph the Transit of Venus - the last for more than a century. From this part of the world, the transit would be visible only at sunrise. I had a thick filter (a piece of welding glass) that I used for several photos of the transit. Some of those photos came out OK. My best photo, however, was this one that I took for fun, without a filter, just as the sun began to emerge above the clouds. I wasn't expecting this photo to show the shadow of Venus, but - to my surprise - after reducing highlights and increasing contrast, it produced a remarkable image. (Another fun fact about this photo was that I was standing in Europe, but watching the Sun rise over Asia!) (June 6, 2012. Nikon D5000, 1/1600s @ f/9, 300mm, ISO 200.) - Totality!
I had to include this photo of the August 21st solar eclipse in my list of favorites for 2017 - even though the photograph is technically flawed. I was taking a series of 'bracketed' photos - each with different shutter speeds - in the hope of merging them together afterwards, to show more detail of the corona. But I forgot to turn off my camera's 'auto-ISO' feature, so each shot ended up getting taken with an ISO larger than I wanted. This photo (the best-looking of the set) was taken at 1/1000s, but with the camera's maximum ISO of 25600. That's why there's so much 'noise' in the image. (August 21, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/1000s @ f/5.6, 300 mm, ISO 25600.)
