Of the many photographs that I took in 2016, these are my 10 personal favorites.
- Reflected Barge
Driving through the San Francisco Delta close to sunset, I caught this rusting barge, illuminated by the late afternoon sun. (February 13, 2016. Nikon D5000, 1/640s @ f/5.3, 62 mm, ISO 200.) - Camouflaged
In the backcountry of California's Henry Coe State Park, I caught this remarkably camouflaged Coast Horned Lizard. (April 30, 2016. Nikon D5000, 1/640s @ f/9, 85 mm, ISO 200.) - Curious Coyote
Technically this is not the greatest photo (I was without my telephoto lens, and so had to heavily crop the image), but I was amused by the expression of this coyote staring at me as I hiked through the 'Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge' in a remote region of southern Oregon. (May 23, 2016. Nikon D5000, 1/320s @ f/6.3, 85 mm, ISO 200.) - Rothenburg ob der Tauber
The picturesque tourist town of 'Rothenburg ob der Tauber' in Germany is normally swarming with tourists. By getting up at 7am, however, I was able to catch this scene without any tourists spoiling the view. (July 16, 2016. Nikon D5000, HDR-processed from a 3-shot bracketed exposure @ f/6.3, 16 mm, ISO 200.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothenburg_ob_der_Tauber - Kuressaare Castle, Estonia
In July I visited the three former Soviet 'Baltic States' - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. I caught this view of Kuressaare Castle - on Estonia's Saaremaa Island - close to sunset. (July 25, 2016. Nikon D5000, 1/250s @ f/9, 32 mm, ISO 200.) - 'Trail 401'
In August I had the pleasure of finally riding one of the US's most famous mountain biking trails - the '401 Trail' near the alpine resort of Crested Butte, Colorado. (August 25, 2016. Nikon D7200, 1/100s @ f/8, 19 mm, ISO 100.) https://travelcrestedbutte.com/crested-butte-mountain-biking-401/ - Corona Arch
The Moab, Utah area is famous for sandstone arches. After a short hike, I caught this view of Corona Arch, illuminated by the late-afternoon sun. (August 27, 2016. Nikon D7200, 1/125s @ f/7.1, 24 mm, ISO 100.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_Arch - Panther Beach
Yet another 'Golden Hour' photo - this time of a sunlit wave breaking on northern California's Panther Beach. (September 25, 2016. Nikon D7200, 1/1000s @ f/4.5, 24 mm, ISO 220.) - Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe
Polarizing filters often add drama to photos of sky and water - especially at elevation. ('Bonsai Rock' is near the center of the photo.) (September 30, 2016. Nikon D7200, 1/50s @ f/7.1, 22 mm, ISO 100.) http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/bonsai-rock-lake-tahoe - Security Theater
North and South Korean soldiers face off at the 'Joint Security Area', Panmunjom, in the Korean DMZ. (It really is 'Security Theater', because I was told that the South Korean soldiers stand there only during the times when visitors are present.) (The horizontal strip of concrete (running between the two blue buildings) is the Military Demarcation Line (i.e. the border with North Korea).) (November 18th, 2016. Nikon D7200, 1/100s @ f/9, 48 mm, ISO 100.)
