Of the many photographs that I took in 2017, these are my 10 personal favorites.
Gigi!
Black dogs can be difficult to photograph; their black fur can be hard to properly expose for. But I was pleased with this photo of my friends' dog Gigi, taken with a telephoto lens. Gigi seemed happy to see me as well. (February 26, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/400s @ f/8, 240 mm, ISO 360.)
Reflections of a Wet Winter

Mangroves on the Beach
I normally dislike 'blown out highlights', but they seemed to work in this photo - taken at Cape Tribulation in northern Queensland, Australia. (June 14, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/25s @ f/6.3, 16 mm, ISO 180.)
Pluto's Cave
I visited this lava cave in far northern California while en route to Idaho for August's total solar eclipse. (August 8, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/25s @ f/5, 16 mm, ISO 1100.)
Totality!
I had to include this photo of the August 21st solar eclipse in my list of favorites for 2017 - even though the photograph is technically flawed. I was taking a series of 'bracketed' photos - each with different shutter speeds - in the hope of merging them together afterwards, to show more detail of the corona. But I forgot to turn off my camera's 'auto-ISO' feature, so each shot ended up getting taken with an ISO larger than I wanted. This photo (the best-looking of the set) was taken at 1/1000s, but with the camera's maximum ISO of 25600. That's why there's so much 'noise' in the image. (August 21, 2017. Grizzled Old-Timers
A wide-angle lens worked well for this photo of two very old Bristlecone Pines (each probably thousands of years old) in the White Mountains of eastern California. (October 11, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/400s @ f/5.6, 15 mm, ISO 100.)
Supertree Grove
These artificial tree-like sculptures in Singapore's 'Gardens by the Bay' are very widely photographed; I was pleased to capture them from an unusual angle. (November 11, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/800s @ f/6.3, 10 mm, ISO 100.)
Te Rewa Rewa Bridge
I photographed this striking bridge (while riding on the Coastal Cycleway near New Plymouth, New Zealand) in the late afternoon. I like the patterns of light and shadow on the bridge's 'fins'. (December 21, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/250s @ f/9, 24 mm, ISO 100.)
The Three Sisters
My favorite drone photo of 2017 was this view of the 'Three Sisters' sea stacks on the northern coast of New Zealand's Taranaki region. I like the way that the line of cliffs and waves leads your eye towards the horizon. (December 22, 2017. DJI Mavic Pro, 1/4115s @ f/2.2, 4.73 mm, ISO 100.)
