- The Dish
While walking in the Stanford Foothills in the Autumn, I captured the famous Stanford Dish, backlit by the late afternoon Sun. (November 4, 2023. Apple iPhone 13 Pro, 1/1449s @ f/2.8, 77mm, ISO 32.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_Dish - Tauranga Bay, West Coast
At this bay, on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, offshore rocks were framed by flowering flax plants as I shot towards the late afternoon sun. (November 24, 2021. Nikon D7200, 1/320s @ f/11, 26mm, ISO 100.) - Kea
This kea (a native alpine parrot) was, unfortunately, munching on some human junk food when I photographed it in New Zealand's Southern Alps. (November 22, 2021. Nikon D7200, 1/250s @ f/4, 80mm, ISO 100.) - Shadow Play
This tree - in the Chinese Garden in Dunedin, New Zealand - wasn't particularly interesting by itself, but it cast an interesting shadow. (November 18, 2021. Apple iPhone 13 Pro, 1/2801s @ f/1.8, 13mm, ISO 32.) - Aurora Australis
On the evening of November 4th, while on vacation in southern New Zealand, I saw reports on social media that the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) might be visible. I drove to a rural location with a clear southern horizon, and, with the naked eye, saw just a faint green glow. However my iPhone's camera, with a long exposure and high ISO, was able to capture much more. (November 4, 2021. Apple iPhone 13 Pro, 1s @ f/1.5, 26mm, ISO 10000.) - Archway Islands, Wharariki Beach
These islands - just offshore from the South Island's Wharariki Beach - also appeared in 2015's "10 Favorites" list. The 2015 photo was a view of the islands from the beach. This year, I got the chance to revisit this beautiful beach, and get a drone's eye view. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wharariki_Beach The 2015 photo: http://photos.rossfinlayson.com/picture.php?/208/category/34 (November 11, 2020. DJI Mavic Pro, 1/1499s @ f/2.2, 4.73mm, ISO 100.) - Macaque Eating an Orange Peel
When one thinks of Singapore, "monkeys" don't come immediately to mind. But an open space reserve in the center of the island - surrounding the country's main reservoir - contains a population of macaques. (November 19, 2019. Nikon D7200, 1/500s @ f/8, 300mm, ISO 18000.) - Supertree Grove
These artificial tree-like sculptures in Singapore's 'Gardens by the Bay' are very widely photographed; I was pleased to capture them from an unusual angle. (November 11, 2017. Nikon D7200, 1/800s @ f/6.3, 10 mm, ISO 100.) - Security Theater
North and South Korean soldiers face off at the 'Joint Security Area', Panmunjom, in the Korean DMZ. (It really is 'Security Theater', because I was told that the South Korean soldiers stand there only during the times when visitors are present.) (The horizontal strip of concrete (running between the two blue buildings) is the Military Demarcation Line (i.e. the border with North Korea).) (November 18th, 2016. Nikon D7200, 1/100s @ f/9, 48 mm, ISO 100.) - Psychodelic Bamboo!
During a brief visit to Tokyo, I stopped by the Imperial Palace Gardens and got this photo of a patch of bamboo. I deliberately over-saturated the image for a more 'abstract' look. (November 1, 2015. Nikon D5000, 1/50s @ f/4.2, 18 mm, ISO 200.) - Busselton Jetty
I like to use the 'Rule of Thirds' as a guideline when composing shots. This photograph of Western Australia's Busselton Jetty - the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere - is a good example. I like the way that the sky, sea, and beach form distinct stripes, each taking up about a third of the frame. (November 28, 2014. Nikon D5000, 1/200s @ f/10, 28mm, ISO 200.) - "Autumn in Vancouver"
While in Vancouver, Canada for a business meeting, I noticed the spectacular fall colors of these trees. I like the contrast between the colorful trees on the right-hand side of the path, and the almost bare trees on the left-hand side, and how both rows of tree focus the viewer's attention towards the high-rise buildings in the background. (November 8, 2013. Nikon D5000, 1/50s @ f/14, 40mm, ISO 250.) - Stay Away!
This crab - on Saint George Island, off Florida's Gulf Coast - stood up on its hind legs in a defensive posture as I approached. (I was pleased at the detail that was captured here.) (November 2, 2012. Nikon D5000, 1/800s @ f/6.3, 85mm, ISO 200.) - McWay Falls at sunset
McWay Falls (Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park) is a beautiful, but relatively little-known spot on California's "Big Sur" coast, just 2 hours drive from the Bay Area. (November 10, 2010. Nikon D5000, exposure blending from 3-shot bracketed exposure (-2,0,+2 EV) @ f/16, 20mm, ISO 200.)
